A few years before
the monthly 'Daylight Zombies Buskers' started,
our hosts Margy & Norman, with Ray
organised and invited local North East band STAN
the Band, out |
||||
| ***HUGE SUCCESS!!!*** 'Viva eSTANa 2026' was a fantastic, two weeks of music, fun & sun, out in Gran Alacant. Margy (& Norman!) Finlay pulled out all the stops to pull it all together after the late disappointment of losing the popular poolside venue of Bernars Place, due to a recent fire and indeed, the now proposed redevelopment of the site. A great find in relocating to Duna, Evoca Living Resort, which, with a little understanding from both sides, when the venue realised what sound problems there could be (while hosting two rock bands!), but with the top soundman Ray McDonald ,the day went ahead with little problem. The Danny Needham Explosion & STAN the Band rocked the Sunday afternoon away, entertaining the 'Zombies' and the resorts own guests! The new venue having plenty of welcome (for some!) shade from the sun above, and the owners happy at the end of the day, and willing to have 'us' all back next time, and It'll be even better when they've finished the ongoing works and that little pool will be sprinkling away to give a nice cooling effect!!! David & the Molly Malones staff, worked wonders in getting the street closed off for the Saturday, and, after what looked like a washout in the morning thunderstorm, the sun shone through to let the afternoon of JP & the Sometimes Band, Russ Tippins, and STAN to entertain the huge crowd. Also, Miley
O'Roukes with Jay & Danni
(never stopped!) & staff for hosting two STAN gigs either side
of the weekend, and of course Bas
upstairs in Reckless, for hosting the Russ, Niko and Zombies buskers gigs....and the
late nights/early mornings!!! Thanks to all venues, restaurants, local bands/buskers locally, and those others on 'the bill'... Rock La Fonola, One More Time, Vera & Jamie who entertained us throughout! P.S. SAD
NEWS that STAN (the Band) have called it a
day, but, fear not, next years event WILL BE
TAKING PLACE! |

Davys
Gran Alacant Guide
Heres my little review of getting about in Gran
Alacant for those of you who havent been before.
It takes about 15mins by car from the airport, and a taxi/Uber
will set you back around 25. There is no direct link by
bus. (But, please do check!).
Gran Alacant is split' into a few little
areas of shops, eateries and apartments, not that far from each
other.....
The Commercial Centre/Shopping Mall
up the hill and is the first place you see/drive
through, arriving off the main road from the airport. There's
shops, cafes, bars, etc, and is near where the main hotel is for
anyone staying there. About 10min walk down from the shopping
centre is a little square called MASA,
with a few bars and restaurants, a lovely sun trap, and is next
door to BERNARS PLACE, where the Pool
Party was due to be held. You could of even
tried your hand at a game of bowls, even the bowling clubs future
is now under threat of closure!
Its a slow easy walk down the hill, passing an ALDI
(for food shopping) and the GABE Market
(where you can buy almost anything!) to the main area and the
strip where most of the Zombie organised
events are being held, and is close to the CARABASSI
beach and CLOT DEL GALVANY nature park.
Theres another area further south of the main centre, but
still up on a hill, and is the location of TOMMYS bar
where RUSS TIPPINS has his solo gig. Its a
steeper walk down from this area (a long steady slope of a road
to the strip or an even steeper road to/from the
beach! (A bus between Alicante/Santa Pola runs this road - check
times!).
Along the seafront heading toward the airport is another area
called Arenales, with bars and restaurants,
shops, chemists etc. A lovely paved walkway gets you there,
looking out over the beach and dunes
watch out for the
roller skaters! You might be lucky see the locals doing some
Spanish dancing!
The main strip is about 100 yards long with
bars, restaurants, a little shop, cafe etc, set on two levels
with seating/dining outside on the lower, and the upper level,
accessible by a ramp, with the bars having an outside covered
terrace. At the top end of the strip on the lower/ground level is
MOLLY MALONES, which is the suntrap for most of
the day. This venue hosts the 'Street Party',
closing off the main road to traffic. Next door are a few lovely
eateries/restaurants (Indian/Mexican/Italian etc) before we hit MILEY
O'ROUKES bar with some outdoor seating. STAN
play here twice, and next door is another place to eat.
Above, on the upper deck is JOLLY ROGER Bar, a
chippy/restaurant, and next door is RECKLESS bar, where
the Buskers Night will be
held... next the lovely Tiki Bar... then
theres a gym (hahaha no chance!).... and another bar, Redz
above Mollys at the top end.
From the strip to Bernars pool is around a 20min
casual walk up the slope, though you will get to meet Irish
Michael who will no doubt be doing a little shuttle
taxiing for a couple euros each.
Bars aren't huge inside, so get in early if you need to watch
and/or sit, but hopefully you'll still be able to listen &
enjoy everything going on, sitting outside in the sun and/or warm
evening air.
Toilets are usually just the one cubicle (for the blokes) ...so,
gents, do know your cycle
;-)
At
bottom of the strip is Clot Del Gavany
for walkers (can be tricky if walking up to the top of
Arenales!), and bird watchers (a couple of hides
etc).
The Carabassi beach is long, beautiful
and clean, with water clear and safe. A couple of pop-up beach
bars will be open by May. Lovely just to chill out or going for a
lovely plodge along the shoreline toward Arenales.
The beach is about a 15min walk along the bottom road from the
strip, and youll pass the bus stops where
you can go to Alicante City (about 50min) or Santa
Pola (15min). There is also a bus that does a circuit of
Gran Alacants main areas. Beware, and give the buses some leeway
regarding times off the timetable! The fares are a couple of
euros each way.
Alicante City is beautiful, busy, with a lovely beach, marina, and the castle on the hill. You can catch the train to Valencia (2hours away and other places) if you fancy a day elsewhere. Santa Pola has a lovely marina front, lined with restaurants and a lush place to watch the sun go down as well as a nice glass or three of wine, and has a couple of market days for those looking for a bargain!. Those with own transport can visit little towns/villages tucked away on the seafront (Urbanova) or further in land.
Offical events start on Wednesday 5th May, but the local bars will still be having their weekly quizzes or music nights running before, alongside, and after the 'official' dates....and there'll no doubt the odd Zombie willing to play a few tunes into the early hours whoever is out there!
You WILL NEED TICKETS for Mollys 'Street Party' and 'New Venue'- contact Margy/Norman on the links above to reserve!!!
Dont forget the mozzy cream, sun cream.... and of course, the hat!! Enjoy....you'll have a great time!
